The Collection > Art Nouveau (Nippon)

The primary motifs used in Old Noritake Art Nouveau are flowers, leaves and trees. These designs are based on complicated, elegant curves and light pastel colors. The paintings were greatly influenced by traditional European decorative style and Art Nouveau style of those days.

One of the characteristics of Old Noritake is that various techniques and styles are used in a single piece. Moreover, traditional Japanese techniques such as Moriage are used alongside Western techniques in the same piece. These techniques are not second-rate of Western techniques. This cultural crossover makes each technique more meaningful and enhances this excellent form. It is interesting that Japonism, such as Moriage, was used in many Old Noritake Art Nouveau pieces. Japonism was popular in Europe at that time. Many of the Old Noritake Art Nouveau pieces that are admired today feature Moriage.

We have classified the Art Nouveau pieces by technique, as well as by usage and form.
